“Bright and early we were
given a delightful mountain ride to the big tree district and served with a
bountiful feast. The scenery was lovely, the mountain air bracing, and the
novelty of the ride enticing. Our four-horse team wended its way up the
mountain side, passing here and there a waterfall, now a sharp curve, now
hundreds of feet above the valley below, through which a bright, sparking
stream rushes madly on its course down the mighty canon; now in the bright
sunlight, now in the shade of massive trees we wended our way until the picnic
grounds were reached. And what grounds! Shaded by trees hundreds of feet high,
reaching their arms into heaven, outstretching their boughs up to the One who
gave them life, tall monarchs which for 2000 years have stood as living
monuments of their Creator and Preserver.”
