REDWOOD ROYALISTS

San Francisco Chronicle, August 10, 1902

“In honor of the King's Coronation a number of English residents of Santa Cruz and their friends enjoyed, Saturday, at the Felton Big Tree Grove, a basket picnic. The day was a most delightful one, with a tendency to rain at nine o’clock. The road was sprinkled the whole length, even from the main Felton road to the Grove. At eleven o’clock teams commenced arriving in fair numbers, and a little later the grounds were full of guests, their rigs being tied on the opposite side of the river. The English flag was in evidence, and some of the ladies wore a beautiful blending of the American and English flags.”

This festive celebration was hosted by Milo Hopkins at Cowell's Big Trees.
