During the pioneer era some redwoods with burnt out bases were known as goose pen trees and were fenced in to corral livestock. Author's Personal Collection |
"Of course everybody
has heard of the Calaveras Big Trees, and those of Mariposa also, and many a
pilgrimage is made every year to behold these stately forest monarchs, but you
have to travel so far to reach them, and they are so hedged about by snow in the
winter that any one coming here at that season will fail to get a peep at them.
So then you ought to know of this lovely grove [Big Trees Grove] within an hour’s drive from
Santa Cruz, or a day’s travel from San Francisco. A pleasanter camping ground
it would be hard to find."
