"Among the many pleasant
excursions on the Fourth of July was that of the members of the First
Congregational Church choir ... The party left ... [on] the S.P.C.R.R. at 8:25
A.M., on a special car, for Felton Big Trees, arriving there about noon. The first
item of interest on their arrival was the spreading of a long table, numerous
baskets and boxes were relieved of their heavy burdens, and a feast fit to set
before a king was soon prepared by the ladies, to which the sacred songsters
did ample justice. After the refreshments were disposed of, the party scattered
around the grove in search of wild blackberries and other curiosities,
returning with red noses and a generous supply of tar weed. Mr. Benham then
gathered his wandering flock together, several choruses were sung, Mr. Thomas
gave one of his amusing recitations ..."
