THE AMARANTH TREE

Author's Personal Collection
One of the more mysterious sounding tree names in Big Trees Grove was dedicated on August 6, 1922. The Amaranth Tree was named for a women's Masonic-affliated group.

“The order of Amaranetis of California, which is a side issue of the Eastern Star, [had] a tree dedicated to its past royal matrons and patrons.”

The wording on the Amaranth Tree plaque read:

Dedicated to

Hollywood Court, No. 30

Order of the Amaranth

of California

The ceremony was carried out by Mrs. Mary Hinds, Royal Lady Commander, Past Matrons and Patrons' association, No. 1, of California. Mrs. Hinds was described as the niece, by marriage, of the late A.J. Hinds and of Mrs. Duncan McPherson, Sr. The only known mention of this tree dedication is an article entitled, "Interesting Tree Dedication" in the Santa Cruz Evening News, August 5, 1922. If anyone knows any further information about this tree or its dedication, please let me know.
