The Steel Magnate Comes to the Big Trees

San Francisco Call, March 12, 1910
On March 11, 1910, Big Trees Grove hosted a visit by millionaire Andrew Carnegie and his family. Carnegie came to Santa Cruz to see the new library on Church Street which his $20,000 donation helped build.

After touring the new library, the Carnegies drove up San Lorenzo Canyon to see the redwoods. After touring Welch's Big Trees Grove, the Carnegie party sat down to a picnic lunch at Cowell's Big Trees. Carnegie said he was "... perfectly overcome. I will remember these Big Trees always, but more still will I remember the big hearts of your people."
