Unsung Woman Preservationist

Scott Peden Collection
Anna Welch

At her death in 1905, Anna Welch was described as “one of the few owners of magnificent redwood forests who preferred to protect, rather than cut them down, and her property near Santa Cruz has in consequence been for many years one of the show places of the State."

After the passing of her husband Joseph Warren Welch in 1875, Anna was left a widow with five children. In addition to her home in San Francisco she had the responsibility of managing over 350 acres of land in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Her first order of business was to figure out what to do with the picnic ground her husband preserved. Anna's love for the trees led her to enter into an 1876 lease agreement with John Hooper to manage Big Trees Grove, which set it on the path to becoming one of California’s most popular resorts.
