“Of course the
Big Tree Grove was selected, and of course the Felton cars were chartered for
the occasion, and of course people from all other churches were in attendance,
and of course good music was provided, and of course the tables were loaded
down with the good things of life, and of course Hooper had every thing in
apple-pie order, and of course the happy throng passed the hours away in
singing, dancing, chatting and laughing. And of course we speak by authority
when we say that the ladies interested return their heartfelt thanks to Mr.
Hooper for the use of the Grove and the many kind services they received at his
hands.”
Big Trees Grove was a favorite spot for church picnics, often drawing hundreds of people.

Since the mention of the Episcopal Church picnic appeared in a Santa Cruz newspaper, it is believed that they were referring to Calvary Episcopal Church located on Center Street. Calvary, built in 1865, was the first Episcopal Church in Santa Cruz.
